Many people have learned to understand anger as a valuable part of our emotional makeup. Used inappropriately it is harmful, but controlled and directed it is a powerful tool. Fear is, or at least it should be, treated the same way.

Our capacity for fear is standard equipment. It is designed as protection. Denying its presence or place in our life will cut us off from an important part of who we are.

Fear elicits a fight or flight response. Many people label it as a negative emotion. In reality, it is neither negative nor an emotion. What has been labeled is the response to changes in our physiology. That reaction may be negative or positive. It is our choice.

Fear is the closest thing we have to a superpower. It releases chemicals into the blood stream that can cause a heightened focus creating a sense of sharper hearing, sight or even the perception that time has slowed. People have been reported to perform feats of superhuman strength under the influence of a fear induced adrenalin rush. Fear can also be fun. The entire thrill ride industry is built on it.

Think of our ancient ancestors; if the lion is pouncing, you have two choices, run or fight. With wisdom and training they learned to run away, or in some cases push into the fear and spear the beast. The most detrimental response to fear is freezing in place. That is the once certain way to get eaten.

While we may not often be threatened by wild beasts, we do allow fear to keep us from things we need and love. The fear of failure, ridicule, or financial setbacks has as much power over us as the animals did our ancestors.

I call fear The Dragon. It is huge, intimidating, and powerful. Dragon Riding is about recognizing our fears and learning how to befriend them and let them carry us to new heights. I think you will find it to be a satisfying ride.
